Information for people trying to trace seafarers

The Society is often approached for help from individuals engaged in family history research attempting to trace seafarers who may have received treatment at the Dreadnought Hospital Greenwich. The following may be helpful to you.

Under the Merchant Shipping Act of 1835 British registered ships were required to file crew lists with the Register Office of Merchant Seamen (now the RGSS). You may find helpful information about these records through the following website, click here

The majority of Dreadnought medical records pre - 1948 were destroyed as the result of bombing of the Hospital during the Second World War.

Responsibility for records after 1948 rested with the local health authority. Some Hospital records are available through the London Metropolitan Archive on 020 7332 3820.
